Kollur – a temple town in Udupi district, is one of the seven centres of pilgrimage in Karnataka. It enshrines the famous Mookambika temple, and is known for its association with one of the greatest philosophers of India – Aadi Sankaracharya. It is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, along the meandering Agniteertha tributary, about 40 kms from Kundapur and 80 kms from Udupi, Karnataka. It has a population of 3265 and is the destination of thousands of pilgrims, exceeding a lakh per day during festivals.
One of the major problems in Kollur is the acute degree of pollution of the rivulet due to unplanned growth and unregulated activities. The Summer School intends to study and analyse the temple town of Kollur particularly from the perspective of its environmental problems and explore possible solutions. The summer school will include
• Lectures by academicians, practitioners and government officials
• Visit to Kollur, visual survey of the town
• Interactive studio work in groups at Manipal
The outcome of the Summer School will be published in due course and shared with the participants.
