Indian women's cricket team has made the whole country proud. Even though they won runner's up in the recently held World Cup, they gained love and affection from people all over India. India has always been a cricket crazy nation. However it was always associated to men's team. Many people even did not know that there was women cricket team. People also hardly knew the player's name. But everything changed this year, when India almost won the World Cup.
Indian eves, defying all sorts of expectations, drove their way to the final of Women's World Cup earlier this month in England. Entering the tournament as the fourth-ranked team, the Women in Blue trumped the top three, England, New Zealand and Australia en route to the summit clash.
India had beaten England in first round. Unfortuantely England took revenge in the finals. Everything was going in India's way. They had bowled very well. The target set by England was easily achiveable. The batswomen in Indian team were in great form.
They also satrted well. Everything was going on fine, until a sudden collapose happened in last 15 overs. Looks like the young Indian team felt the pressure of final and choked. After the loss of two early wickets, India were cruising with two partnerships that Punam Raut built with Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy. India had hopes till Shikha Pandey got run out. It was the end.
Indian women's team captain Mithali Raj knows she will never be able to lay her hands on a World Cup trophy. It was a trophy that seemed within her grasp until the lower-order Indian batting imploded in a spectacular fashion against England in the final at Lord's on Sunday (July 23). The 34-year-old did well to keep her emotions in check at the post-match ceremony but admits she broke down during the team meeting after the final. Hats off Inidan women cricket team and we hope they win world cup next time.
