Janet Noronha was known as mother of popular multi lingual actress Ester. But now she is known as first ever female producer from coastal Karnataka. As a child, Janet was always interested in art. However unfortunately she could not take it as a career as she did not get the required support. However when her daughter expressed her desire to be part of tinsel town, she whole heartedly gave her support. She has been a backbone of her daughter's career. She has now started her own production house Janet Noronha Productions. Her debut production film "Sophiya- A Dream Girl" is all set to release on May 12. Talking to KonkanConnect.com, Janet speaks about her film:
What made you venture into film production ?
I like music, dance and art. I was acting in school dramas. My daughter is an actress. I used to accompany her initially. Now I hardly accompany her. Hence I was left with a lot of free time and wanted to utilise it for something productive for the society, the upcoming young talent and at the same time make the best use of my time and money. I thought producing is the best option. I wanted to do something in my mother tongue Konkani. I decided to produce a Konkani film. This way my banner Janet Noronha Productions banner was launched.
What is "Sophiya- A Dream Girl" about?
The film is an family entertainer. It has a message. The film has come out very well. It is about human values. It tell us not to be selfish and we must be ready to sacrifice for society. My daughter Ester is the heroine, Popular Bhojpuri director Harry Fernandes has directed this film. Elton Mascharenhas and Shelton Crasta are playing the lead in the film. Goan famous comedian Prince Jacob and Mangalorean comedian Richard will also be seen in important role in the film . The film has been censored with U certificate. The film will release on May 12 in Prabhat, Cinepolis and Big Cinemas in Mangaluru. In Udupi, the film will release in Ashirwad and Inox. The film will also release in single screens in Moodibidri, Karkala and Puttur. We have got offers to release the film in Bengaluru. I have not decided about it I will myself distribute the film under my banner.
How are you planning to market the film?
We are planning to put Paper ads, Banners of the film all over city and churches of South Canara. I have also approached auto and bus union to put poster of our film in autos and bus. A van promoting our film will go around Mangaluru. I am also putting ads in popular Konkani magazines.
Do you have plans to produce other language films?
Yes I will. I want to make films for other languages. I want to expand my production house and do not want to limit myself to Konkani. Next year I will produce Kannada or Tulu film. I will also produce Konkani films. I hope my production house gives chance to many youngsters from coastal Karnataka,
What do you have to say regarding market for Konkani film?
Konkani speaking people are present from Ratnagiri to Kasargod and is spread across four states including Maharashtra, Goa, Kerala and Karnataka . But unfortunately we have not made any films for them. So I hope that my film reaches them. We have a big market. I am planning to put projector and screen the film in these areas, so that people can watch the film. I hope my film begins the journey of Konkani films . I will try to reach them. Once they come to know, they will watch more and more Konkani films. In Goa, Konkani films do well, even though their population is less than that of in Karnataka. I do not see the reason why Konkani films will not do well in Karnataka.
Are you planning to release your film outside Karnataka?
Yes, I am releasing the film in Goa, which will be our second big market after South Canara. Our film will also be released in overseas. We already have one show booked in Israel. In USA, Canada and Australia, we have been asked for shows. However I am waiting for the film to release here, I want to see the reaction of people here and accordingly release it in overseas.
Ester is a popular star in other film industries. Any plans to dub the film?
Our film's post production was done in Hyderabad. Those who were working on the post production did not understand language, but were highly impressed with the technical and story. They told that the film is very good and said that the film will also do well, if dubbed in Telugu. I have not decided about it as of now. We are releasing the film in subtitles so that non Konkani people will understand.
Do you want to say anything to Konkani film lovers?
I am glad that I am first woman producer to produce a Konkani film industry. I am living my interest after Ester. In childhood, I could not follow my dreams. I am happy and proud to do Konkani film. My aim is to encourage Konkani talents. I will try to give them platform in future.
